Hossein's Persian Kebab

The name of the place brings me back to the days when I'm watching Aladdin - Magic lamps, Carpets, and luxury. The moment I stepped inside the restaurant, I had the same feeling. The dim lights with chandeliers and the extravagantly created design makes me feel rich.
Hossein's menu.

We love kebabs especially when they are properly seasoned. That's the reason why we tried this place since I've heard that they are famous for these kinds of food.

For appetizer, I ordered my ever favorite Greek Whole Salad (share-390 pesos)
Greek Salad, 390 pesos

The salad was drizzled with lots of vinaigrette. All of the greens, tomatoes, and olives are flavorful. If I were to compare it with other Greek salads I've tried, I can say that belongs to the average list. It lacks feta cheese, walnuts, and sun-dried tomatoes, which makes the salad, Greek.

Ratings: 3/5

Next, we ordered the famous South Asian bread - Roti (110 pesos), and Roti Channai (120 pesos).
freshly cooked Roti, 110 pesos
Roti Channai , 120 pesos. hot, sweet, and yummy!
I love both of these breads. Roti is plain, simple, and matches kebabs well. On the other hand, if you are on the sweeter pastry side, then try Roti Channai. It has a crunchy crust but chewy inside. You'll surely love it !

Lastly, the star of the night...the Mix Kebab II combo platter, 657 pesos
Mix Kebab II-Chicken, Ground Beef, and Tenderloin kebab
I love the way this dish was presented. Just a heads up, if you order kebabs, it might take you approximately 20-25 minutes waiting time since they are really cooking the meat slowly, to ensure the tender quality.

My favorite kebab for this platter is the chicken-the meat is super tender, and the spices are strong, a perfect kebab. The ground beef, and the tenderloin has the same oh-so-good texture and juiciness. Since I'm not fond of eating beef, my dad consumed the 2 sticks without hesitations.

Of course, as a soothing drink, we ordered Persian Tea, 146 pesos

With its red color, and soothing aroma, Persian tea will now be one of my must-order drinks in restaurants .
Our Persian foodtrip experience will not end without a picture -
me-matching the theme with the Persian spirit.
Overall, what is my rating for the place?
3.5/5

-the food is good, but the price is quite high. Would I go back? Yes,when I have enough budget to try their other kebabs like fish, and shrimp. So if you have the money, time, and interest to try out this luxurious Persian place, then go !

They have 3 branches-

Lee Kum Kee -Cook with the Masters recipes be Chef Him Uy de Baron

I am such a huge fan of cooking shows, demos, and series. One of my dreams is to spend a day with a chef, cooking great food with him, and then, feeding the yummy dish to the hungry ones.  Dramatic, Adventurous, and Heartwarming all at the same time.....

Fortunately, Lee Kum Kee, a globally renowned ethnic Chinese enterprise providing sauces and condiments, sponsored a "Cook with the Masters" event at Festival Mall.
wide range of Lee Kum Kee products

Of course, a foodie like me won't let this happening pass, and I immediately took a seat near the stage.
The stage of Cook with the Masters with Chef Him Uy de Baron

The featured chef of the program is Chef Him Uy De Baron-considered to be one of the top chefs in the country, and contributor in the Appetite Magazine.

He cooked 3 dishes. First is the Beef Bulgogi Taco with Chili Garlic. I was a little bit late, so I was not able to have a taste of this one. Nevertheless, I was able to snap a picture of the dish.
Beef Bulgogi Taco with Chili Garlic

The second dish is Mushroom, Chive, and Cheese Dumpling,
Mushroom Chive and Cheese Dumpling
The dumpling is delicious! It's a gyoza with a twist since it has a native local cheese inside (kesong puti). Once I visit Chef Him's restaurant, this will be one of my orders for appetizer. of course the whole dish got better when it was dipped in Lee Kum Kee Seasoned Soy Sauce.

Ratings: 5/5

Here's a shot of the recipe:

Cooking Demos will not be complete without cooking tips right?

Cooking Trivia A: When cooking dumplings, you need to place it in boiling water. Once it sinks, it means that it is already cooked. Also, don't forget to add sesame oil in the boiling water to add moisture in the dumpling.

The last dish is the Grilled Hoisin Pork Chops with Grilled Peach Salsa:
Grilled Hoisin Pork Chops with Grilled Peach Salsa-great presentation right?
This one is the champion of the night! tender, juicy, fruity, and yummy! What more can you say with it? Definitely, I'll be trying to make this one at home to impress my friends and family. Thanks to Lee Kum kee XO Sauce, Plum Sauce, and Hoisin Sauce for creating that kicking flavor in this recipe.

Free taste for the audience! Yehey!
Free taste of the Pork chop! Mouthwatering ,...
 The recipe:

Cooking Trivia B: To make your pork chops tender, do the process of Brining- mix water, salt, sugar, and you can add some herbs and spices, and marinate the porkchop in this solution overnight. then marinate your pork to your special sauce for 4 hours. The result will definitely be rewardingly tender!

Cooking Trivia C: XO sauce is a very delicious sauce that is made from dried scallops (from China), Chinese Ham, special wine, and many others. To create this is quite exhausting, so you can just buy Lee Kum Kee's own version to taste the majesty of this sauce!

Cooking Trivia D: Pork and fruits greatly match each other. Also, when fruits are grilled, their flavors become more intense since the sugars within them caramelized. uhmmmmm.yummy!

The show will not end without me taking a picture with the chef!
candid shot =)

It's my honor to be with one of the top chefs in the country.-Chef Him Uy de Baron!

Thanks Lee Kum Kee for the great cooking demo and free taste event!
the sauce tasting event using turnips as staple.
I hope to be attending more cooking demos in the future. It makes me feel good and inspired to pursue a side career in the field of cooking and baking. =)

NEXT STOP: October 08, Glorietta 5, Chef Bruce Lim.
Who wants to join?=)

I think, this is also the start of Captain Food exploring the world of kitchen. Watch out for more of my recipes, kitchen experiments, and hopefully delicious pastries!

Happy Lemon

If you are really following my blog, I think you'll know that I'm a great fan of Milk tea drinks and places. It's my comfort drink! (^_^)

Luckily, this week has been very good for me because I was able to try one of the most famous milk tea places---HAPPY LEMON! The famous milk tea place owned by Chris Tiu.

Green Tea with Rocksalt and Cheese, 95 pesos

I ordered Green Tea with Rocksalt and Cheese, 0%. My friend Kryscel had same order with 50% sugar. Reason why? We had a sudden splurge of "healthy living concept" in our minds...

Verdict? hmmm..not so good. I think the tea that they use is too strong for my taste. What I love with it is of course the rocksalt and cheese topping. My friend liked it though. She said that at first, its not good, then later on, it gets yummy. Unique right?

Ratings: 6/10

Pictures!
Me (playing with the order vibrator), and Kryscel (having her first sip)

Our friend Mark tried the Mango and Orange Yogurt Mousse Spin,
Picture courtesy of  Happy Lemon website
When we asked him, what does it tastes like, he said that its sour-due to the orange and yogurt. Nevertheless, he was able to clean the cup.

Ratings: 7/10

After ordering, I had some regrets. I wish I've ordered the Cocoa with Rocksalt and Cheese that I had days ago when my friend Freya brought some in the office. here are some of the not-so-prepared pictures,
Halfway...looks so good..and definitely tastes perfect!

Close-up view of the very delicious rocksalt and cheese topping,
the rocksalt and cheese secret topping! the shining star of the drink.

Honestly, this is the top 1 of my drink list.  I was able to finish my cup in 5 minutes! The cocoa was blended well, creamy, and addicting! The rocksalt and cheese, added the "mystic" flavor that paired well with the chocolate flavor! AWESOME and HEAVENLY GOOD! I want one now...can you give me please??

Ratings: 10/10

No wonder, why so many people are raving about it. Just looking at the line, makes me wanna taste their drinks now,

After trying several flavors, I'd definitely want to go back again to Happy Lemon. here are some of the flavors that my friends recommend, and I'm up to the challenge of trying it:

a.) Coffee with Rocksalt and Cheese
b.) Milk Tea with Oreo

and here ends my Happy Lemon experience!

Mr.Kimbob

I love Malls. Sometimes, I go there alone, walk, walk, shop, and eat, and walk again. It's some sort of relaxation and personal time for me.

Since I'm tight on budget, I opted to tour around SM Southmall's newly constructed foodcourt and found this Korean food store:
Mr. Bibimbob's short menu
As you can see, the prices are fit for the budget! Short menu , but looks yummy right!?

My order is of course my favorite Korean food: BIBIMPOP. With Mr. KimBob, they call this, BIBIMBOB-for the meat, I chose chicken (since i'm currently on a healthy living principle)
Bibimbob, 95 pesos
My 95 pesos was really well-spent.
The presentation is great-comparable with Pepper Lunch's style. The vegetables, have the right texture and softness. It has a light flavor that complements a vegetarian's tongue. The rice is top of the class, and egg is not oily. Lastly, the meat (chicken is what I ordered) tastes good! Its like a chicken steak.

Will I go back? YES! I'll eat here everytime I visit SM Southmall. Try it too!

Rockwell's Ultimate Taste Test 6.0 - Captain Food's Top 5

September started with a bang because of the Ultimate Taste Test 6.0 by Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet.

The stage background. Just a trivia, Orange is a color that is appetizing according to studies.

Few weeks before the "big" food day, I had several visions on the wide variety of foods, yummy samples, and excited foodies allover the venue. And it all turned to reality yesterday.

Imagine having 50 food suppliers in front of you, each presenting their own unique recipe. All you need to do is taste it, and be a Food critic! Sooooo C-O-O-L right?

Without further-a-do, I'm sharing with you my top 5 favorites for the event, since I can't review all 50. This may seem different from your taste/decision since each person has his/her own preferences, and I think this is what makes Taste Test events special and fun-the diversity behind the crowd of foodies!

TOP 1: Luigi's is our top favorite-it has been a consistent decision for almost every friend that i bump with. They always tell that the Philly Changa is a winner!
Cordon Bleau, and Philly Changa (Philly Cheesesteak roll) of Luigi's
Ratings: 5/5

At first glance, you may think that it's just a plain, old, fried roll. Once you bite it, the flavors will suddenly burst! it is loaded with cheese and tender steak! So good, so delicious, if i'll be given a plate full of it, I can eat it I swear!=)  The cordon bleau with aligue sauce is also great! Just the right amount of meat, ham, and cheese. Here is their facebook link, so that you can view their menu, prices, and awesome food pics ==> Luigi's.

Ratings: 5/5 (best food for any occasion!)
Picture with the chef-Luigi Muhlach. I'm a fan now.

My second favorite is the Smoked Pork Ribs of  Top 2: Big Daddy Jay's
Smoked Pork Ribs of Big Daddy Jay's.
A close-up - hungry-fying isn't it? hmmmmmm
@ Big Daddy Jay's booth

If you love ribs, then, try Big Daddy Jay's. They offer a very tasty version that is not dry but full of flavors. It is more on the hamonado (sweet)-style , that really complements Filipino taste. The owner said that it is actually their first event/ appearance in public, and by next week, they'll join Mercato. Better watch out for this one great yummy store!

Ratings: 5/5 (perfect lunch/dinner!)

Next is Top 3: Empire's French Macarons
Empire's French Macarons---so colorful and yummy! Favorite: Spicy Chocolate
I'm a big lover of Macarons eversince. What I love with Empire's version is that they have unique flavors. What I tried is the Chili Chocolate- and there's absolutely no regrets with this choice. It has the chocolatey goodness followed by a spicy kick in the end. Adventurous and Awesome at the same time.

I plan to taste more of their flavors like the White Chocolate, Hazelnut, and Triple Chocolate.  Here is their website for your reference==> Empire

Ratings: 5/5 great dessert(recommended: spicy chocolate)

The next is a personal recipe - Top 4: Marla's original Muncheez
Marla's Original Muncheez - unique, yummy, and not too sweet
Close-up . Looks healthy yummy eh?
The Muncheez is actually composed of cornflakes flavored by Marla's personal recipe. My first impression when I had a bite is " Crunchy and Chewy". It's delicious because it is not too sweet and light-tasting, making it a perfect snack to munch on. Also the creator of this one is very friendly and accommodating, giving the details of her yummy product, here is a link so that you can further explore her product==> Marla's Muncheez

Ratings: 5/5 for a light snack

Since we are on the dessert lane, I'll continue my review with the Top 5: Cupcake Botique by Klar Joseph

WOW! Tray full of cupcakesssss!
Samples!  Red Velvet, The Diplomat, and Green Tea
Perfect view! Presentation is good and enticing!
Cupcakes are famous since they're easy to eat and sweet. It can make people happy. The Cupcake Boutique's version judging first from its presentation can already make you happy and hungry.

After I took a bite, I said to myself that I have found it! The nice red velvet cupcake! For me, it's delicious since it is not too sweet, has the trace of chocolate, and effect of the red velvet goodness! The cream frosting on top is just perfect.

here's link for Cupcake Boutique's page: --> Cupcake Boutique by Klar Joseph

Ratings: 5/5 (my favorite red velvet cupcake)
